In the last days before the Civil War, Morna Debney is about to marry soldier Clay McAvor. When the president is elected by Lincoln, Mississippi is going to withdraw from the Union. Morny’s grandfather Big Sam Dabney, who owns a huge flourishing valley in Mississippi, remains faithful to the Union, like his son Hoab, the father of Morne.
Hoab wants to keep the neutrality behind the valley, and oppose any invaders, whether they are southerners or northerners. He is supported by a local newsman Keith Alexander.
